- OUT 27th April: PRIMO & THE GROUPE - Movement 12"+CD (PRIMO-09)
The first is "Movement" which kicks off the A-side, the killer jazz dance tune, performed by a vibrant ensemble featuring dynamic sax and lyrical piano. This is a cover version of a fantastic but relatively little known masterpiece of Japanese jazz, a piece full of riveting pace and vitality, that was originally featured on the first lead album by Ryusei Tomoyose. Tomoyose was a great tenor saxophonist who gained a reputation as the Okinawan "Nabesada" (Sadao Watanabe) and played a major role in the development of the jazz scene in Okinawa. The sparkling tone, suggesting the radiant blue of the sea, and the melody invoke in the listener an ideal balance of tension and comfort.
This is followed by another version of the same piece given a jazz-rock interpretation employing irregular metre. While on the one hand displaying an aggressive mien, the scintillating contrast between the legato playing on the Fender Rhodes piano and the sharp rhythms gives rise to a symphonic afterglow.
The first piece on Side B is "Salsa de Santa Rosa", a tune in a bop style that's pulled forward by the earthy bass line. The performance features an exciting Afro-Cuban flavor along with an immaculate and brilliant horn section. You're bound to enjoy to the full the appeal unique to jazz and the lightness of this great rendition of this piece.
The final item is a remix by Eiji Takehana (Jazzbrothers), one of the most popular DJ/producer on the Japanese club scene. This is a really impressive and memorable remix featuring the ethnic tone that pervades the whole recording combined with compelling phrases in irregular metre.This vinyl 12" is killer! Proper jazz dance vibes...

"A Child Runs Free" was featured on on Gilles Peterson World Wide, "Music For Jazzdancers"(Freestyle-UK), Contemporary Jazz"(Tramp-Ger) and had a great reaction from domestic and foreign hard diggers as ”Great dance track with a conscience!” In 2010, We've got Long-awaited new work "March Of The Goober Woobers e.p.". "SUN e.p." is released in the summer 2011. About next work, "Movement 12"+CD" out spring 2013.

This has a freewheeling, exploratory sound that takes off in a mode that's a bit post-Coltrane, but which also has some freer touches too. This track have a rhythmic, Strata East-like quality.
A2. Why He Had To Go : This is my sound encapsulated in four minutes of heart-stopping soul perfection. Clear vocal over a smoky beat, elegant horns and throbbing bass!
B1. Tell Me A Bedtime Story : PRIMO takes on Herbie Hancock - turning in a heavenly version of the classic - smooth, soulful, groover with Latin-influnced beat, spectacular horns, beautiful piano, lots of great keyboard lines and incredible vocals from Kylie Auldist.Kylie's voice reminds me very much of early Aretha Franklin.
B2. Why He Had To Go (Patchworks Disco Remix) : This Remix is performed by Bruno Hovart - under various names and into different projects : Patchworks, Metropolitan Jazz Affair, Mr President, The Dynamics, Cinnamone, Porks Watch etc...

Upon relocating to the East Coast, they encountered saxophonist E.J. Yellen (b. Brooklyn, NY) and bassist Gerald Veasley (b. Philadelphia, PA); shortly thereafter (1979) they recorded their first "demo" in New York City.

Mr. Brand also produced the album. Tunes are: "In A Mellow Tone"; "Prelude To A Kiss"; "Sophisticated Lady"; "Mood Indigo"; "Lush Life"; "I Let A Song Go Out Of My Heart" and "Solitude".

Including the original version of "Frog Child" taking a funkier, more direct approach, the effect is electrifying. "Inside, Outside" - that groove just won't stop.

Primo's got a very hip approach to his work -- a sound that's somewhere in the territory of Mark Murphy or Bobby Cole -- light years from mainstream male vocals, and often served up with some very jazzy grooves in the background! Many tracks here are originals by Primo, and a few others are well-chosen covers too -- and in a way, the feel is quite like some of Mark Murphy's best overseas work of the 60s, or Bobby Cole's landmark album from the early 60s -- a set without compare, and with a freshness that's just getting appreciated all these many years later.
